  • Give your dog a Job.
  • Do more with your dog!

Why Should you take part?

Mantrailing is a different kind of dog sport, prioritising your dogs happiness while harnessing and indulging in their most natural desires and skills. Interestingly, it is fantastic as a tool for working on behaviour problems such as fears, phobias and anxiety.

Mantrailing allows the dog to make choices independently from you, being the only dog led sport. This is great for building your dog's decision making confidence, and allowing them to choose a desirable and rewarding behaviour to redirect from problem behaviours. It is stress reducing, confidence building and empowering for your dog.

Mantrailing puts the dog in control, after all, they are the experts! Through observation, us handlers learn to read our dog's intricate and individual body language, fueling a fantastic bond and aiding in other areas of training. Rather than barking orders at your dog in an adrenaline heavy arena, you are stepping back and letting them teach you how its done. By taking part in mantrailing, you and your dog are one team, and achieve success by working together. When the missing person is found, you will throw a party with your dog, in whatever way they like the best! Mantrailing makes working with you the most fun thing for your dog, even when outside, building engagement and allowing you to build focus from your dog over time.

Many dog's do not cope with the business of dog sport classes, this is where mantrailing comes in, to allow these dog's to have a highly rewarding job to do that they can cope with, whatever their temperament. During training, dog's are securely away and one dog works at a time. Trails can be adapted to suit your dogs behavioural needs, mantrailing aims to be inclusive to all dogs. With care and expertise, mantrailing can be used to build confidence in dog's who are nervous of people, and to allow reactive dogs to eventually work past their triggers.

A dog's sense of smell is their most distinct sense. The nose gives your dog more information about the world than their eyes do! A dog's nose is a mechanical masterpiece for harnessing scent detection, and their olfactory center in the brain is over 40 times larger than a humans, and they have up to 300 million receptor cites in the nasal cavity, compared to our 10 million! Processing the incredible amount of sensory information that your dog takes in while trailing is exhausting, so leaving a training session will be mentally exhausted with an elevated mood and reduced stress.

Rex and I have now been taking part in sessions  1-2 times a month since we completed our introduction. It is addictive!! Rex is very enthusiastic and absolutely loves the sessions, he is progressing brilliantly under Katie’s excellent instruction and we are both learning so much. Rex has become increasingly confident with the trails and I’m constantly amazed at what he can do. You can tell how much he enjoys the sessions with his big goofy grin and, oh so pleased with himself, face when he finds his missing person. It is an incredibly rewarding form of physical and mental exercise for him, and I love working with him, we are a team, and I think building that trust and that bond is what makes Man-trailing special. We have met some lovely people and their fabulous dogs and it’s so wonderful to see each dog no matter what age, breed, size or physical capability enjoy trailing and succeeding at it. Any dog can do this sport. I would highly recommend Katie as a trainer and Mantrailing as a fantastic way of enriching your dog’s life and both of you having great fun along the way.

“I was looking for something to mentally stimulate my spaniel cross, particularly on dark evenings. Due to his lack of general training and reactivity to other dogs most dog sports such as flyball were not suitable for him. Mantrailing has been a godsend, we have only been going a few months and I am so impressed with his progress. And best of all it is the only thing that truly tires him out, he will sleep for the whole day!  Now he understands how much fun the game is, I have seen him grow in confidence and is sometimes able to completely ignore other dogs while he is 'working'!”

I have two rescue dogs who both have a tendency to be nervous of people, We have been mantrailing for 7 months on and off, and they are now much more confident and will even go up to strangers!”

" I discovered mantrailing while looking for something fun to do with my new puppy kody. We love attending mantrailing sessions as they are fantastic for giving our puppy lots of great experiences with strangers and new places! It is also a fantastic way to tire hum out! Kody blew me away when he picked up the game on only his 1st go! He is now 8 months and I am so excited to see him progress even more as he ages.

  • What age can my dog start mantrailing?

Puppies can start once vaccinated. Dog's of any age can trail, it's great fun and fantastic for confidence building.

  • My dog is reactive/nervous, can they come to classes?

    Yes!

Dog's are worked one at a time, with the rest waiting their turn in cars. This means dog reactive dog's can enjoy classes too, as long as we trail in quiet areas.

Mantrailing is a great way for dog's who are nervous of people to build up positive associations to strangers.

  • Can any dog mantrail?

Any breed of dog can take part in mantrailing.

  • What happens during classes?

At each class there are 3-5 handlers and dog's. One dog at a time is set on a trail of a missing person we have placed nearby. At each session, everyone takes turns in being a missing person and a handler and someone is always with the cars too. Classes are at various locations and times.
